Te Pu-a-nga Maara
Te Pu-a-nga Maara is collective of Rangatahi from Makaurau, Papatuanuku and Manurewa Marae. With the support of Healthy Families, Auckland Council, OMGTech!, The Southern Initiative, DoC and the University of Auckland, we work towards amalgamating Matauranga Maori, Science and Digital Technologies to create innovative, youth lead, indigenous solutions for a sustainable future.
Our collective runs a youth lead wananga series that focuses on education and kaitiakitanga through project based learning. Wananga have a holistic focus on educating around rangi, Whenua and moana through workshops and projects. Some of the projects we have implemented to date have included the development of an inexpensive and innovative water quality testing kit that can be utilised in both fresh and salt water environments; testing, monitoring and planting on the Puhinui and Oruarangi streams according to the Maramataka; planting and using native trees as environmental indicators; and pest control, traditional trapping and diversion. Te Pu-a-nga Maara will continue to provide youth with the space to innovate, create and lead in uncovering indigenous solutions for a sustainable future.
